ST. LOUIS CATHEDRAL COMPACT MIRROR
ST. LOUIS CATHEDRAL COMPACT MIRROR
The St. Louis Cathedral, standing majestically in Jackson Square, is one of New Orleans’ most iconic landmarks and the oldest continuously active Roman Catholic cathedral in the United States. The first church on the site was a simple wooden structure built in 1718, the same year New Orleans was founded. As the city grew, a more substantial brick church replaced it in 1727, dedicated to King Louis IX of France, who would later become Saint Louis. That second church was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1788, which devastated much of the French Quarter.
Over the years, the building underwent several expansions and renovations, most notably in the 1850s, when it was largely rebuilt and given the grand façade and triple steeples that define its appearance today.
